  1. How can I find out about job opportunities at UEL?

You can search for current job opportunities and apply on-line via our website. During the search you will also have the option to register for e-mail alerts for future positions matching your search criteria.

  2. Can I send a speculative CV?

We will not accept speculative CVs.  We suggest that you check our site regularly for jobs that may interest you.  Alternatively you can take advantage of our e-mail job alert service, which alerts you to the latest vacancies that match your search criteria, as soon as they arise.

  3. How do I know if I am qualified or have the experience for a particular job?

When a post is advertised, a job description and person specification are posted on our website. The person specification sets out the experience, knowledge, skills and attributes deemed to be essential for the role. You must demonstrate in your application how you feel you meet each essential criterion. If you meet any of the desirable criteria, please tell us about this too.

  4. I am unable to complete the online application form, can you send me a paper application pack?

We would encourage you to apply online as the system is user-friendly and the application simple to complete. However if you would like a paper application pack these are available from HR services by emailing HRHub@uel.ac.uk . The information sent to you will be exactly the same as the information on our website and you should allow at least four working days for the information to arrive.

  5. I have missed the closing date. Can I still apply?

Unfortunately, no further applications will be accepted after the closing date stated in the job advertisement.

  6. I do not have an email address. How will I apply?

You can register for a free e-mail address with organisations such as:
Google, Hotmail or Yahoo. Please note that we do not specifically endorse these e-mail service providers and many other providers are available.

  7. Are my qualifications equivalent to A-Levels?

For some positions A-levels or equivalent are an essential requirement of the person specification. As there are many different types of qualifications it is recommended that you check the government guidelines, which can be found on their website:

    https://www.gov.uk/what-different-qualification-levels-mean/list-of-qualification-levels

  8. I have made some mistakes on my application form - can I correct them?

Unfortunately, once you have submitted your application form online you cannot change any details other than your address.  It is possible to preview your application form at any point during completion, and we prompt you to review your completed form at the point of submission.

  9. Can you tell me if you have received my application?

Once we receive your application online we will send you an e-mail to confirm receipt.

  10. Who should I provide as my referees?

Your referees must be able to comment on your past employment and recent work performance in relation to the selection criteria in the person specification. It is advised that your most recent, direct supervisor/line manager, or, if you have just completed full time education, your head teacher/tutor/lecturer should be nominated as one of your referees. Please do not include family members, friends or partners. Please note that referees' details are compulsory fields on our application form..  There is an option for you to indicate that your referees should not be contacted prior to further confirmation. We will, however, need to obtain two references which are satisfactory to us before you are appointed.

  11. How long will I have to wait to find out if my application is successful?

Once the shortlisting process is complete we will notify unsuccessful candidates by email.

  12. Can I request feedback if not shortlisted for an interview?

Unfortunately, due to the high number of applications we receive, we are unable to provide individual feedback to non-shortlisted applicants. To be shortlisted for an interview candidates need to meet all of the essential criteria listed in the person specification. Within this, we look for clear evidence and specific examples of how your knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes meet each criteria. For information, all completed applications are scored by two or more panel members based on the answers provided against the criteria in the person specification. Each criteria is scored between 0-3, and typically the 6 - 8 overall highest scoring candidates will be invited to attend an interview. The competition is very high, and if applicants do not provide such information then their application will not be shortlisted.

  13. What is the Equality & Diversity Monitoring Form used for?

Our policy is to value and promote equality and diversity. It is our intention to ensure that job applicants and staff are treated solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential, regardless of sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, marriage and civil partnership, gender reassignment, and pregnancy and maternity.

The information gathered on the form is used to assist us in monitoring the effectiveness of our equality and diversity policies and will not be taken into consideration for short-listing and interviewing purposes, managers do not have access to this while shortlisting. In accordance with GDPR, we will seek your explicit permission should we intend to process any sensitive personal data for any reason other than for monitoring purposes or exercising a legal right or obligation required by law. Sensitive data included your racial or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, political beliefs, trade union membership, religious beliefs, physical or mental health and criminal offences

  14. I am applying for more than one job, do I need to fill out a separate application form?

For every post advertised you must ensure that you complete a separate application form and provide us with a separate supporting statement. You cannot use one application form to apply for more than one job. The information you complete on your initial application, excluding your supporting statement, will be saved for you to amend and submit for subsequent applications.

  15. How do we protect your information?

We use a server certificate (also known as a digital certificate) to assure you of our identity and secure sockets layer (SSL) to encrypt data transmissions.

  16. I require a visa to work in the UK. Can I still apply for your advertised vacancies?

UEL is a licensed sponsor for visa applicants.  For specific roles we would consider those without the right to work in the UK but this is on a case by case basis.

  17. I have a current visa to work in the UK for my current job. Can I still apply for any advertised vacancies?

We will need to refer to the terms of your visa as to whether the permission you have to work in the UK is transferable to another employer. Please see the UK Visa and Immigration website for more information about working in the UK.

  18. I am a non British student currently studying in the UK. Can I take up employment with UEL?

Yes. However, if you are a visa student, in most cases the terms of your student visa prevents UEL from offering permanent work. It may be possible for you to work 20 hours per week during term-time and full-time in vacation. You should check carefully the conditions under which their visa has been granted.

  19. I am applying from outside of the UK. What will happen if I am invited for interview?

If you are invited to attend an interview you will be provided with guidance as to any arrangements the school or service puts in place for overseas candidates. We normally reimburse reasonable expenses incurred for travel from the port of entry in the UK and accommodation. Alternatively we may be able to arrange online interviews, as decided by the chair of the selection panel.
