About the Job

We are seeking a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy to contribute to teaching, research, clinical supervision, and academic leadership across our undergraduate and postgraduate counselling provision.

The post holder will contribute to the academic, professional, research, and administrative activities of the Counselling Cluster within the Department of Social Work, Counselling and Social Care, and, where appropriate, across the wider School. The role includes module leadership, teaching across a range of counselling-related subjects, assessment and feedback, supervision of student research projects, and participation in admissions, recruitment, and academic administration.

Teaching will be delivered primarily face-to-face at our Stratford Campus, with some online delivery as required. The role also involves providing high-quality clinical supervision and supporting students to integrate theory, research, and professional practice in line with BACP and other relevant professional standards.

The post holder will be expected to engage in scholarly activity and contribute to the continued development and growth of the counselling portfolio, as well as to the wider research culture of the Department and School.

About You

We are looking for an enthusiastic, student-focused academic and practitioner who is passionate about counselling education, clinical practice, and widening participation in higher education.

You will hold a BACP-accredited postgraduate qualification in Counselling and Psychotherapy and/or Counselling and Coaching and be qualified to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will be registered with a relevant professional body (preferably BACP), ideally accredited or eligible to apply for accreditation.

You will be able to demonstrate significant experience of counselling practice, alongside experience of teaching and/or training in higher education or a comparable professional context. Experience of clinical supervision, research supervision, module leadership, and curriculum development is highly desirable, as is a strong commitment to scholarly activity and professional development.

You will bring excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills, and a clear commitment to inclusive, ethical, and reflective practice. An understanding of, and commitment to, supporting diverse student cohorts and working flexibly (including occasional evenings and Saturdays) is essential.

The Department of Psychology and Human Development comprises a student-focused team of academics who deliver high-quality accredited degrees in Psychology including our BPS-accredited MSc in Occupational & Organisational Psychology and ABP-accredited MSc in Business Psychology. There are organisational and business routes in our closely allied applied positive psychology and coaching courses. The department also provides professional training in Psychology and a highly popular MSc Psychology (conversion) course as well as a suite of undergraduate accredited degrees. Our breadth of provision complements a thriving research-based PhD programme. Alongside excellence in teaching, we also boast of an impressive research profile; in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) the school was one of only four submissions to secure 100% 4* rating for research impact. The postholder will contribute to the provision of a high-quality, research-informed learning and assessment experience. This includes teaching across theoretical and applied components of the course (e.g., health and wellbeing at work; assessing and developing individuals in the workplace; work design, organizational change and development; leading and motivating people at work). You will supervise students undertaking research projects, applying your research skills (quantitative and/or qualitative as required) and supporting students’ development through their learning.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level, the postholder will also play a role in curriculum design, research development, and/or programme innovation, contributing to the strategic direction of the programme within the School.

The role will involve leading and managing the Department of Psychology and Human Development, delivering excellence across the full portfolio of academic programmes and activities, within the context of the operational and strategic development of the School, and in support of the achievement of the School’s KPIs and UEL’s Vision 2028.

As Head of Department, you will be part of the School’s Executive Team. About the Department of Social Work, Counselling and Social Care

The department includes three subject areas, or ‘clusters’, and the following courses:

BSc Counselling, MA Counselling and Psychotherapy, MSc/MA Counselling and Coaching (all of our counselling courses are accredited by the BACP), BA Social Work, BA Youth Work, MA Youth and Community Work, MA Social Work (all of our Social Work courses are accredited by Social Work England), BA Psychosocial Studies, BA Politics and International Relations, and MSc NGO and Development Management.

An exciting range of new university-based courses and new apprenticeships are currently in development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Our aim is to have clear pathways for applicants at a wide range of starting points, including the School’s New Beginnings course, up to Doctoral level and professional accreditation.
