Known for its innovative, impact-driven research and practice-based education, ACE plays a vital role in UEL’s Vision 2028 to become the UK’s leading careers-first university. Our school promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, sustainability, and excellence in teaching and research.

About the Role

We are looking for a Research Assistant to support delivery of a British Council/STDF-funded research project titled “Climate Resilient Energy Efficient Low-income Housing in Egypt (CRLiH)”, delivered through the International Science Partnership Fund (ISPF).  The project is jointly led by Dr Arman Hashemi (University of East London) and Dr Ashraf Nessim (Ain Shams University, Egypt).

This interdisciplinary project explores the impact of climate change on thermal comfort, energy performance, and wellbeing within low-income housing in Egypt. Using mixed research methods—including behavioural surveys, environmental monitoring, and dynamic thermal modelling—the project aims to generate retrofit strategies that improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance occupant health and wellbeing.

As a Research Assistant, you will work closely with UK- and Egypt-based teams to analyse collected data, develop and test computer-based retrofit models (e.g., IES VE, EnergyPlus), and contribute to the development of evidence-based design and policy recommendations. You will play an active role in research dissemination, including writing academic publications, presenting at conferences, and engaging with stakeholders.

There is also the opportunity for a part-funded PhD studentship (Tuition Waiver) as part of this position, subject to final approval.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Arman Hashemi, School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering (ACE), University of East London a.hashemi@uel.ac.uk / +44 (0)20 8223 3233

About You

You will be a highly motivated researcher with relevant expertise in the built environment, energy performance, and retrofit design. You should possess a postgraduate degree (MSc or PhD) in Architecture, Construction, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related discipline.

You will bring strong technical skills in building physics, dynamic thermal modelling, and environmental monitoring. Ideally, you will have experience with simulation tools such as IES VE or EnergyPlus, as well as proficiency in handling and analysing qualitative and quantitative data. Experience with post-occupancy evaluation, field surveys, and data loggers (e.g., temperature, RH%, CO₂) is also essential.

Excellent communication, academic writing, and teamwork skills are critical, as you will be expected to collaborate across institutions, report research findings, and contribute to stakeholder engagement activities. A flexible and organised approach, with a willingness to travel for research and dissemination, is essential.

 Essential criteria:

  • MSc or PhD in a relevant field (Architecture, Construction, Environmental Sciences)
  • Knowledge of building physics, retrofit strategies, and energy performance
  • Experience with dynamic thermal modelling software (IES VE, EnergyPlus)
  • Proficiency in quantitative/qualitative data analysis and academic writing
  • Field experience with environmental data loggers and post-occupancy evaluation
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary, international team

 We Offer

  • Opportunity to contribute to a high-profile international research project
  • Dynamic and inclusive research environment in a leading London university
  • Professional development support and academic mentorship
  • Potential tuition waiver for a part-funded PhD, subject to approval
  • Access to modern research facilities and collaborative networks across disciplines
