About Us

Situated in the Student Engagement, Retention and Success Unit, the What Works Team aims to build the evidence base in access and participation. The team supports project leads across the student lifecycle to monitor, evaluate and report on the efficacy of projects designed to increase equity of opportunity in access, success and progression. As part of OfS regulation, the team works to deliver our ambitious evaluation strategy set out in our Access and Participation Plan.  

About the Job

We are recruiting two Monitoring and Evaluation Officers to join the What Works team. As part of the What Works team, you will work with project leads to plan and deliver monitoring and evaluation strategies working cross-functionally across schools and departments. You will work collaboratively to share insights and contribute to an evaluative culture across the University. You will have a keen eye for research and evaluation methods, and the ability to design and conduct rigorous research essential to building a robust evidence base.  

Through working in partnership with the Access and Participation Team, project leads, academic schools and colleagues across the university, you will support evidencing the impact of interventions across the programme.  

The person carrying out the role will work dynamically to undertake qualitative and quantitative analysis of multiple sources of data to generate an understanding of what works and where practice can be improved, and to work with colleagues to make recommendations aimed at improving outcomes for students.  

About You 

You will have excellent research aptitudes, an analytical mindset, and a genuine commitment to using evaluation and evidence to improve equity of opportunity in higher education. To be successful in the role, you will have  

  • Knowledge of evaluating widening participation or student-facing initiatives within the UK Higher Education sector. 

  • Experience developing and embedding evaluation frameworks. 

  • Ability to draw conclusions from multiple sources of data to provide robust and meaningful insights, conclusions, and recommendations.  

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills particularly related to the presentation of complex data, evaluation reports, and research methods.
